NACE is the four digit activity classification system issued by the Statistical Office of the European Communities (Eurostat) in 1992 entitled 'Nomenclature générale des activités Économiques dans les Communautés européennes', abbreviated to NACE. Although, NACE was originally an acronym, today all countries refer to "NACE" so that it is now intended to be English, German, Spanish etc. for the European Community Classification of Economic Activities. The UK SIC(92) system is based on NACE, but a fifth digit has been added for clearer definition of classifications. Thus the first 4 digits of the 1992 SIC coding system are equal to the European NACE system, as the 5th digit has simply been added for clearer classification.
